Fathers are a very important part of our lives. They love us, protect us and teach us how to grow into adults. I know I have learned a lot from my father and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. In order to show our love for our fathers this father’s day, I have written a little short story. Hope you enjoy it.
If you haven’t read any of the other short stories or backstories, you can find them here: short story: https://www.victoriamayburybooks.ca/2020/06/05/words-unsaid-part-one/ backstory:https://www.victoriamayburybooks.ca/2020/02/15/the-product-of-love-gills-backstory/ .
Having said that, enjoy the story and happy father’s day!
Love For My Father
“Ms. Adams?” A male voice asked in the waiting room. A dark haired woman nodded and stood waiting for further instructions.
“Yes?” She asked softly.
“He is ready to see you, Ms.” The nurse led her to a small apartment in the residence. She took a deep breath and opened the door to the apartment.
The woman stepped through the door as the nurse left. She walked towards the old man who lay on the clean bed.
“Hello!” She smiled brightly at the man, keeping her tears at bay. “I’m here to tell you a story, would you like that?”
The man grinned like a child. “Yes, please.” He rasped but crinkled his brow. “I’m sorry, do I know you? I haven’t been remembering things so good recently.”
The woman grasped his hand. “Oh, don’t worry about that. Just listen to the story.” She smiled brightly again as the old man got himself comfortable. Once he was ready, she began.
“Once upon a time, there was a little girl who was loved very much. Her father would always be there for her. After working long days, he’d come home and go on many adventures with her. Even when he had a bad day or was very tired, he would still be the gallant knight to her princess.
He held her after she fell off her bike that first time. He bandaged her scrape and sang her a song as she cried. Her father taught her how to fix their old Mustang. When she learned to cook, he was there encouraging her. Her mistakes and burnt meals he ate with a smile on his face. He always said that she should keep practicing and how every meal tasted better than the last.
He took the day off of work to be there for her high school graduation. His voice cheered her on as she walked across the stage. He was just so proud of his little girl. He was sad when she went off to chef’s school and he waved goodbye to her until she was out of sight.
Her father was wary when she brought home her first boyfriend. When they got married, he knew that man would protect his little sweetness in ways he could not. He was happy for them even as the tears rolled down his face. When she became a mother, he said how much she was like her mother.
Oh, I wish I could tell you of the adventures he had with his grandchildren but you have fallen asleep again.”
The woman rose to leave only to hear from the man.
“I wish I could have met this man, he seemed like a good man.” He whispered.
She smiled at the resting man and pressed a kiss on his head. “You saw him every time you looked in the mirror, papa. Happy Father’s day!”
